Enrichment Courses

Each season, Community Education & Recreation offers a variety of enrichment courses for both adults and children. These classes run for six weeks at a time and include everything from cooking, sports, crafts and more. There is a unique selection that changes every few months; favorites are re-offered if requested by popular demand.  All summer courses begin the week of July 5th unless otherwise noted.

2015 SUMMER KIDS’ COURSES

Mad Scientists
Instructor:
 Ms. Castellano, Pre-K Teacher
Grades: K – 2.  To be held: Tuesday Mornings from 9-10am at New York Ave. School (Ms. Castellano’s Classroom)
Get ready to mix up some concoctions, experiment and brew some fun in using everyday products and supplies.  Students will learn hands-on science basics through interaction, making and doing! A $10 materials fee will apply.

Grades: Pre-K – 2nd .
To be held: Tuesday Mornings from 10-11am at New York Ave. School

Are you a Frozen fan?  Come join in some fabulous Frozen Fun with all sorts of activities
inspired by the movie! From cool crafts to glacial games we will have frosty fun that even Elsa and Anna would enjoy!.

Soccer on the Beach

Grades: K-2 and 3-5  To be held: TBD Evening from 6-7pm (Grades K-2) and 7-8pm (Grades 3-5) at the Morrow Beach in Somers Point.  Learn the basics of soccer or increase your skills in this laid-back class .  Must bring sneakers and water.

Basketball Clinic
Instructor: John Miller and Mario Montanero
Grades: 4-8. To be held: Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1-3pm in the Dawes Ave. Gym
Summer hoops! Skill, drill and play.  Learn basics, gain skills and have fun in the safe, summer program for students have fun playing ball. *New: Kids can also have the option to pay a “drop-in” rate of $5
per session.

Summer Band
Instructor
: Mr. Tostevin, Music Teacher
Grades: 4-8.  To be held: Tuesdays from 9-11am (four-week program)
Don’t let your instruments get rusty over the summer! Come together with your friends to play, learn and create.  Classes will meet for two-hour sessions and conclude with a summer band performance on August 6th!

Gymnastics 101
Instructor: Tracey Rossell, Blake’s Gymnastics
Grades: 1-4; 5-8. To be held: Fridays from 1-2pm (Grades 1-4) and 2-3pm (Grades 5-8) in the Dawes Ave. Gym
It’s a great time to start learning gymnastics! Start with stretching, tumbling and more – all in the safe and fun environment of your school gym.  The course will be led by coaches from Blake’s Gymnastics in Northfield.  Students must wear gym clothes and bring water.

Grades: 1-4 and 5-8.  To be held: Saturdays from 11-12pm (Grades 1-4) and 12-1pm (Grades 5-8) at the SP Tennis Courts.  Take advantage of the new tennis courts in Somers Point and learn the basics to gain skills and experience.
Tennis is great exercise and great fun!  Participants must bring their own rackets and water.

 

SUMMER ADULT COURSES

Yoga For Nepal in JFK Park This Summer
Join us on Saturday, June 13th for the grand opening of The Yoga Summer Series in John F. Kennedy Park. Donation-based yoga classes every weekend all summer long. Donations go to the Red Cross Disaster Relief for Nepal. Whether your a long-term yogi or just trying it out for the first time, all are welcome. Bring your mom, your dad and your best friends, too. Tennis Skills
Instructor
: Edwin Nusbaum, Tennis Pro
To be held: Saturdays from 1-2pm at the Municipal Tennis Courts
Take advantage of the new tennis courts in Somers Point and learn the basics to gain skills and experience. Tennis is great exercise and great fun!  Mr. Nusbaum is an accomplished Tennis Pro and teaches courses in surrounding municipalities and private fitness clubs. Participants must bring their own rackets and water.  Courts are located on the corner of Wayne Drive and DeFeo Lane.

Please fill out the registration form below and indicate which course(s) you will be taking and mail in with payment to: Somers Point CER. 121 W. New York Ave. Somers Point, NJ 08244. The cost for each class is $35.  All checks must be made payable to Somers Point Board of Education.
